Aegean · Cyclades
A drowned volcano with villages along its edge, and the most famous sunset in Greece. We have two houses on the rim.
The island
Santorini is the remains of a volcano whose centre collapsed into the sea, leaving a ring of cliffs 300 metres high. The villages of Fira, Imerovigli and Oia sit along the top, their cave houses dug into soft pumice and painted white, ochre and blue.
It is busy in high summer, and we won't pretend otherwise. But the caldera path is quiet at seven in the morning, the inland villages of Pyrgos and Megalochori are calm all day, and from a private terrace the sunset is yours.
Days out
Ten kilometres from Fira to Oia along the rim. Start early and stop in Imerovigli for coffee.
Two inland villages of lanes and bell towers, with few day-trippers.
Vines trained into low baskets against the wind, and tastings at the estates.
Pale, wind-carved cliffs on the south coast, and a fishing harbour for lunch.
Santorini airport (JTR) has direct flights from many European cities. Fast ferries from Piraeus take about five hours.
May, June, late September and October, when the light is softer and the lanes are quieter.
