Ionian Sea
On the other side of Greece: cypress hills, calm green-blue water and long lunches a few steps from the sea.
The island
Corfu feels nothing like the Cyclades. It is green from top to bottom, its old town was Venetian for four centuries, and the north-east coast faces a narrow channel of water so sheltered that it often looks like a lake.
That calm sea is why families love it. Bays such as Agni and Kalami have shallow, clear water and tavernas right on the shingle, and the drive to the old town takes under an hour.
Days out
Arcaded streets, two Venetian fortresses and a cricket pitch in the main square.
A harbour village with a short coastal walk around its ruined castle.
Two small bays with clear, shallow water and long lunches by the sea.
The dramatic west coast: green headlands, caves and a hilltop monastery.
Corfu airport (CFU) has direct flights from across Europe. Ionian Garden Villa is 45 minutes north by car.
May to October. September is warm and the sea is at its best.
