Aegean · Cyclades
Away from the beach clubs, the north-east of the island is all stone walls, chapels and bays that face the open sea.
The island
Most of what you have heard about Mykonos happens on a few beaches on the south coast. Drive twenty minutes north-east and the island changes: dry-stone walls, small white chapels, farms around Ano Mera and beaches such as Fokos and Mersini, where a single taverna serves the whole bay.
The light is hard and bright, and in July and August the meltemi blows from the north for days at a time. That keeps the heat bearable and the sea lively, and it is why we choose houses with sheltered terraces.
Days out
The island's inland village: a monastery, a square of cafés and the best bakery on Mykonos.
Two quiet north-coast bays with clear water, reached by a dirt road.
A short drive for sunset over Tinos, with a bottle of something cold.
Walk Chora's lanes before nine, while the shutters are still going up.
Direct summer flights from much of Europe land at Mykonos airport (JMK). Ferries from Piraeus or Rafina take between 2½ and 5 hours.
June and September: a warm sea and calmer roads. The wind is strongest in July and August.
